Shannon Betts | Senior | Newnan, Ga.
Shannon Betts was one of the more consistent performers for the Tech women’s tennis team this past season, and that was one reason why she and teammate Martha Blakely shared team MVP honors as announced at the All-Sports Banquet.
Betts won 14 matches in her final campaign in Blacksburg, including 11 of them at the No. 3 spot. In fact, she went an impressive 11-6 at the No. 3 spot this past season.
Of those 11 wins, three came against ACC opponents. She rallied to defeat Maryland’s Welma Luus 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, in the Hokies’ 4-3 win over the Terrapins. She also defeated BC’s Alex Kelleher 6-4, 6-0, in Tech’s 5-2 victory over the Eagles, and she beat NC State’s Chloe Smith 6-3, 6-4, in the Hokies’ 4-3 loss to the Wolfpack in Raleigh, N.C.
She was also a part of more doubles victories than any player on Tech’s squad. She and her doubles partners went 17-13 on the year. That included an 8-5 mark with Katie Blow as her partner, and she also won eight matches with Courtney Rauscher as her partner.
Betts finished her career with 46 singles wins and 57 doubles wins.
