inside.hokiesports.com 23 INTRODUCTION The following information is intended to be a guide to many of the NCAA rules that apply to all boosters of Virginia Tech. We encourage you to contact the Athletics Compliance Office if you have any additional questions. Thank you for your support and cooperation in continuing our tradition of excellence in intercollegiate athletics. Institutional control of athletics is a fundamental requirement of NCAA Legislation. Specifically, the NCAA constitution states that Virginia Tech must: • Control its intercollegiate athletics programs in compliance with the rules and regulations of the NCAA; • Monitor its programs to ensure compliance; • Identify and report to the NCAA instances in which compliance has not been achieved and take corrective actions; and • Ensure those members of the University staff, student-athletes, and other individuals or groups representing the University’s athletics interests comply with NCAA rules and regulations. Compliance with NCAA rules is of the highest priority for Virginia Tech. As a member of the NCAA, the University is responsible for the actions of its alumni, supporters, and fans. Even the best-intentioned action on your part may be a violation of NCAA rules. Please contact the Compliance Office if you have any questions about any NCAA rules. WHO IS A BOOSTER? A booster is an individual, independent agency, corporate entity (e.g., apparel or equipment manufacturer), or other organization that is known to: • Hold, or have ever held, season tickets for any sport with Virginia Tech Athletics; • Have participated in or been a member of an agency or organization promoting any Virginia Tech Athletics program (e.g., Virginia Tech Alumni Association, Hokie Club, Monogram Club, etc.); • Have made financial contributions to the Virginia Tech Athletics Department or to a Virginia Tech Athletics booster organization; • Be assisting or to have assisted in providing benefits to enrolled student-athletes or their families. These benefits include, but are not limited to, financial assistance, use of a car, use of a cell phone, etc.; • Provide allowable benefits (e.g., summer jobs, occasional meals, etc.) to enrolled student-athletes; or • Promote Virginia Tech Athletics in any way. This list is not exhaustive and once you become a Virginia Tech Booster, you retain that status for life. Please contact the Virginia Tech Athletics Compliance Office if you have any questions about your possible status as a booster.
