I still feel my heart racing from the end of the home win over Duke that clinched Tech’s trip back to the “Big Dance.” Those moments get me through affiliate renewal meetings and writing contracts, which is every bit as glamorous as it sounds. This much I know. Buzz Williams and his staff work. Hard. These players work. Hard. Everything hasn’t gone completely to script in Coach’s tenure here, nor would you expect or want it to do so. But the digging that took place to bring this program to where it currently stands should not be taken for granted. Simply to position a team for the opportunities of the near future takes selfless contributions from countless people. Some who still remain. Some who left. It is special, regardless of where it winds up in March. I guess the point of this column is this … wait, does there have to be a point? Yes, the point is this—sometimes, we worry so much about what could happen that we fail to absorb genuinely and feel what is happening. I expect to get emotional during games in the next few months. I know that, and the reason is because I possess a fairly good grasp on how special a place the Hokies sit on the edge of is. So my wish for all Hokies is this: get emotional—in a positive way. Celebrate this journey, even though you don’t know where it will end. Value the way this group represents Virginia Tech. And lastly, enjoy the season. What will this year’s moments look and feel like? I have no idea—and I like it that way. And here’s a little secret. Miss Cleo wouldn’t have either.
