inside.hokiesports.com 39 The Monogram Club at Virginia Tech is an organization of letterwinners from the school’s 22 varsity sports, along with numerous key team support groups within athletics. The club honors first-time letterwinners at a Legacy Letter Jacket Ceremony twice annually and seeks to recognize all current and past letterwinners on its website. Club officers encourage any letterwinners in any current or past collegiate sport to come join the club and celebrate with colleagues in all sports. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF MONOGRAM CLUB Shelbylynn Adair moved to the newly appointed full-time position of Annual Giving Coordinator within the Hokie Club and stepped up to the position of Executive Director of the Monogram Club this past fall. Adair was a multi-sport athlete in volleyball and basketball at two universities. She was three-time letterwinner in volleyball at George Mason, as well as a letterwinner in basketball at GMU. As a graduate transfer in 2003, she lettered in volleyball at Georgia State University. Her honors at GMU included being named CAA Rookie of Year (1999) and second-team All-CAA (1999). Adair coached from 2003-16. Prior to 11 seasons as assistant volleyball coach at Virginia Tech (2006-16), she served as a graduate assistant volleyball coach at Georgia State (2003-04), assistant volleyball coach at UMBC (2004) and at Towson State (2005) and as an assistant with Metro Volleyball Club in Fairfax, Virginia (2001-02). She and her husband, Chugger (Virginia Tech head women’s soccer coach), live in Blacksburg with their family. SPRING SPORTS NEWS Women’s golf: The Virginia Tech women’s golf programwelcomes the support of all student-athlete alumni at spring events in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and the Carolinas, starting in February. The team is ranked No. 60 nationally by Golfweek. The players’ performances this spring are critical to earning an appearance at the NCAA regionals for the second consecutive year in the program’s short four-year history. Men’s golf: Despite some growing pains throughout the fall, the men’s golf team is optimistic heading into the spring season. The youthful Hokies will rely on their younger players to lead the way, as sophomores Slade Pickering and Connor Burgess and freshman Connor Johnson ended the fall season as the team’s leading scorers. The spring schedule begins Feb. 17 in Puerto Rico, with the goal of returning to the NCAA Championship in May. After 36 years of leadership, head coach Jay Hardwick announced plans this fall to retire at the end of the 2018-19 season. He will seek to impart his experience on the young team, as he closes out a successful career. A CLOSER LOOK AT MONOGRAM CLUB BOARD MEMBERS Directors for individual sports serve on the Monogram Club Board and are elected on a three-year rotating basis. Three directors are presented below. Officers for the Club are elected on a two-year cycle in odd years, with an election on the horizon for this April. The three directors below are also officers. ADMINISTRATION (SECRETARY, MONOGRAM CLUB) Sharon McCloskey (Class of 1979; B.S. in biology) Fun facts: As an undergraduate student, McCloskey served as a student manager for the women’s basketball team under head coach John Wetzel in 1976-77. She also worked in the Virginia Tech Athletics Department for 31 years, serving as recruiting coordinator and assistant athletics director, and she eventually retired in 2015 as senior associate AD and senior woman administrator. TRACK (VICE PRESIDENT, MONOGRAM CLUB) Angelique “Angie” Edwards (Class of 1992; B.S. in education and an M.S. in education, sport management in 1994) Fun facts: Edwards ran track from 1988-92, participating in the heptathlon and throwing events. She earnedEd.D. in sportmanagement (2001) from United States Sports Academy. Currently, she lives in Princeton, West Virginia and is the director of sport management at Concord University, teaching in the business department. MEN’S BASKETBALL (TREASURER, MONOGRAM CLUB) Quinton Nottingham (Class of 1995; PhD in statistics in 1991, M.S. in statistics in 1989, B.S. in statistics) Fun facts: Nottingham played basketball from 1986-89 when Virginia Tech was in the Metro Conference. He joined team as a walk- on in 1986 and went on to appear in 78 games over his three years on the team. He started 20 games, of which 16 were during his senior year. He currently works as an associate professor in the Department of Business Information Technology in Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech, joining the faculty in 1995. He once served as the color analyst for the Virginia Tech Men’s Basketball Radio Show from 1992-97. He lives in Blacksburg and can be found at many of the Tech sporting events. In appreciation of the scholarship that he earned for the 1987-89 seasons, Nottingham has funded a men’s basketball scholarship in his name, as well as a student-athlete tutoring room that bears his name and is located in the west side of Lane Stadium.
