Inside HOKIE SPORTS | Vol. 12 No. 3 | January 2020
inside.hokiesports.com 15 The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team entered its match with No. 1 Notre Dame with a losing record, but the Hokies received two goals from standout Marcelo Acuna, and Ben Lundgaard registered a career-best 10 saves in goal to lift Tech to a 2-1 upset of the Irish at Thompson Field. Acuna scored seven minutes into the match and then broke a 1-1 tie with a goal in the 71st minute. The win marked the Hokies’ first over a top-ranked opponent since beating North Carolina in 2011—also in the decade. The 2018 season turned out to be an incredible one for the Virginia Tech lacrosse team, as the Hokies set a school record for both victories (14) and ACC wins (5) and received a bid to the NCAA Championship for the first time in program history. Tech made its first appearance a memorable one, too, beating Georgetown 13-10 behind four goals from both Tristan McGinley and Paige Petty. Meagh Graham added 10 saves in goal for the Hokies, who went 14-7 overall that season. Mekhi Lewis, a redshirt freshman from Bound Brook, New Jersey, won the national title in the 165-pound weight class at the NCAA Wrestling Championships held in Pittsburgh on March 23, 2019. Lewis dominated two-time defending national champion Vincenzo Joseph of Penn State, winning 7-1. The victory capped an overpowering three-day span for Lewis, who beat the No. 1 seed, the No. 4 seed and Joseph, the No. 2 seed. Lewis became the first Tech wrestler to win a national title and only the fourth in ACC history to win the championship event’s Most Outstanding Wrestler award.
