Tech women’s basketball team stuns No. 14 Miami Using hot shooting from beyond the 3-point arc and at the free-throw line, the Hokies pulled away from the then-No. 14 ’Canes down the stretch en route to a 73-65 ACC victory at Carilion Clinic Court on Feb. 21. Aisha Sheppard hit five of the Hokies’ 14 3-pointers, while Taylor Emery canned four and finished with a game-high 24 points to pace Tech, which trailed by five heading into the fourth quarter, but outscored Miami 27-16 in the final 10 minutes. Tech was outstanding at the free-throw line, hitting 21 of 24 attempts—Emery went 10-for- 10—and the Hokies out-rebounded the bigger ’Canes thanks largely to Regan Magarity’s career-high 19 rebounds. Tech beat Miami for the first time since 2008, snapping a 15-game losing skid. 9. Seymour pitches gem vs. North Carolina The Virginia Tech baseball team struggled throughout much of ACC play this past spring, but the Hokies got strong pitching performances throughout the season, and none topped Ian Seymour’s terrific outing against then-No. 8 North Carolina on March 22 at English Field at Union Bank Park. The sophomore threw 8.1 innings of no-hit ball, retiring 19 consecutive batters at one stretch. He wound up allowing a run on three hits, while striking out six in the first complete-game performance of his career. 10. Scoring outburst propels Tech men’s soccer to upset of Notre Dame The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team trailed Notre Dame 2-0 at halftime, but the deficit was nothing to be worried about, as the Hokies scored five second-half goals and beat the then-No. 16 Irish in South Bend, Indiana on Oct. 19. Kristo Strickler got the Hokies started, scoring 20 seconds into the second half, and both he and Brendan Moyers scored two goals each to lead the Hokies. Nikal Clarke-Smith added the other goal. Strickler’s goal at the 58:05 mark turned out to be the game winner. The victory was one of many highlights for Tech this past fall, as the Hokies won 11 matches and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10
