34 Inside Hokie Sports MEN’S TRACK AND FIELD ATHLETE OF THE YEAR DEAKIN VOLZ (Sr.; Bloomington, Indiana) • The men’s track and field program won a share of the ACC’s indoor crown and won the league’s outdoor title outright. The Hokies now have won nine ACC championships since joining the league for the 2004-05 school year, including outdoor track and field titles in three of the past four seasons. • Deakin Volz swept the ACC titles in the pole vault during the indoor and outdoor seasons. He earned second- team All-America honors during both seasons as well, and he departed Tech as a three-time ACC champion, a six- time All-American and the school’s indoor record holder in the pole vault. • Jacory Patterson had an incredible freshman campaign, sweeping the ACC titles in the 400-meter dash during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Patterson set school records in the 200 (20.84), 300 (32.49) and 400 (46.04) during the indoor season and in the 400 (45.57) during the outdoor season. • Jaelyn Demory became the first Tech men’s athlete to win the decathlon at the ACC Outdoor Championships since the school joined the ACC, and his 6,982 points set a school record, breaking a mark that previously had lasted for 43 years. • Isaiah Rogers, a transfer from TCU, earned ACC Men’s Field Performer of the Meet at the ACC Indoor Championships after winning silver medals in both the shot put and the weight throw. He won a silver medal in the shot put at the ACC Outdoor Championships, as well as claiming fifth in the hammer throw.
