inside.hokiesports.com 7 Tech baseball program extends MLB Draft steak Three Virginia Tech baseball players heard their names called on the final day of the 2019 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft held June 3-5, and the selections of Kerry Carpenter, Nic Enright and Jack Dellinger extended the program’s streak of having at least two players drafted to 11 consecutive seasons. The Detroit Tigers selected Carpenter in the 19th round. Carpenter was the only Tech player to start every game this season, and he led the team in home runs (10), RBI (45), doubles (13) and runs (44). A right fielder, he committed just one error on the season. The Cleveland Indians selected Enright in the 20th round. Enright, a pitcher, appeared in 21 games and posted a 3.93 ERA in 50.1 innings. He struck out 63 batters—the second-most on the team—and walked just 17. He went 1-3, with one save. The Tigers also selected Dellinger, taking him in the 32nd round. Dellinger, a pitcher, appeared in 22 games, posting a 5.81 ERA in 31 innings. He struck out 31 and went 1-4, with two saves on the season. All three players had at least a year of collegiate eligibility remaining, but all three plan to sign contracts with their respective teams. In the past 11 seasons, 31 different Virginia Tech players have been selected by teams in the draft. Tech Athletics announces Hall of Fame class Five All-Americans and a former longtime administrator comprise the 2019 Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame class, as announced by the Virginia Tech Athletics Department on June 2. The six new honorees will be inducted at a dinner held at the Inn at Virginia Tech on Sept. 6, the evening before the Virginia Tech football team takes on Old Dominion, and then all will be recognized at halftime of the football game on Sept. 7. by Jimmy Robertson The class includes: Tasmin Fanning , a four-time All-American in track and field and cross country whose third-place finish at the 2008 NCAA Cross Country Championships remains the best finish in program history; Brandon Flowers , a two-time All-America defensive back who helped the Hokies win the 2007 ACC title and who still ranks among the school’s leaders in career interceptions; Matt Griswold , a baseball All-American and a three-time all- conference player who helped the Hokies to two Atlantic 10 team championships during his career in the late 1990s; Dave Smith , a former sports information director who worked 40 years at the school, helping to promote the accomplishments of some of the school’s greatest coaches and student-athletes; Brian Walter , a three-time All-Metro Conference selection and an All- American in cross country in the late 1980s; and Drew Weaver , a men’s golf All-American in 2009 whose biggest career accomplishment occurred when he won the British Amateur in 2007. The new inductees will bring the total number enshrined to 204 since the creation of the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame in 1982. Tech softball finishes nationally ranked For the first time since 2008, the Virginia Tech softball team finished a season ranked, as the Hokies came in at No. 23 in the final USA Today/ NFCA poll and at No. 21 in the final ESPN.com/USA Softball poll. Tech put together one of the best campaigns in school history this past season, going 47-11 overall, 20-4 in ACC play in the first year under new coach Pete D’Amour and earning an NCAA regional bid for the first time since 2015. The Hokies were ranked for 11 consecutive weeks during one stretch of the season—a school record. Tech finished a season ranked for just the third time in program history. TheHokies also ended the season ranked in 2007 and 2008—the same years in which they won the ACC championship.
