18 Inside Hokie Sports cross country ACC finish: fourth WOMEN’S WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY ATHLETE OF THE YEAR SARA FREIX (Sr.; Centreville, Virginia) SEASON HIGHLIGHTS • For the fourth consecutive season, the Tech women’s cross country team finished fifth or better at the ACC Championships. • The women’s team came in third at the NCAA Southeast Region meet, tying for its best finish ever at a regional meet (2006). • Sara Freix won the silver medal in the women’s 6K race at the ACC Championships—the top finish of her career. • Freix and Kyra Lopez earned All-ACC honors after finishing second and 15th, respectively, at the ACC Championships. • Four Tech runners—Freix, Lopez, Sarah Edwards and Ellie Brush—earned All-Southeast Region honors, tying for the second-most ever at Tech to earn such recognition in a season. • Freix finished the season with three top-five finishes. She came in first at the Virginia Tech Alumni Invite, second at the ACC Championships, and fourth at the Virginia Tech Invite. She also came in seventh at the NCAA Southeast Regional meet. • Freix competed at the 2019 NCAA Championship as an individual after receiving a bid through the at-large selection process. She finished in the top 100 in a 254-runner field.
