All past letterwinners are invited to join in fellowship and celebration of the traditions of, and promote the value of, the Virginia Tech student-athlete experience. Club officials seek to reconnect with all letterwinners in past and present sports and support areas within Virginia Tech Athletics and have each of these letterwinners become a connected and engaged member of the Monogram Club! Virginia Tech monograms are currently awarded to student-athletes and support staff in baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross country, football, golf, HighTechs, Hokie Bird, lacrosse, managers, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field (indoor and outdoor), trainers, video, volleyball, and wrestling. CHALLENGES! Club officials challenge all Virginia Tech sport alumni to reach out to the club, as they seek to expand the recognition of past student- athlete alumni. The contact points on the Board are presented below (and online at Virginia Tech Athletics). Reach out to “your” sport representative and help the club build and expand the current base and network of alumni. The simple challenge to each alumnus is to identify her/himself to the appropriate sport rep and to stimulate an expanded link of communication among all teammates over the past years. The challenge is to club members, but more importantly, to those who are NOT club members. PLEASE contact representatives by email, text or Facebook post or messaging, Another challenge relates to the current pandemic and input being sought about student-athlete alumni. As student athletes, past and current letterwinners have all been challenged on the field, court, diamond, arena, ring, and pitch to rise up and meet obstacles. Especially in this national pandemic, the Monogram Club seeks to reach out to all student-athlete alumni and provide support and assistance where needed. This challenge to alumni is to have them assist in identifying past athletes who work on the front lines of this pandemic, from emergency rooms and intensive care units, doctors, nurses and medical staff to emergency medical technicians, national guard and military personnel, and to those providing all with food, water, power, transport, social diversions, and many other critical and essential services. Several alumni continue to serve many in this critical time. PANDEMIC FRONTLINES AND MORE WITH VIRGINIA TECH SPORTS ALUMNI Eric C. Parlette —Parlette (Class of 1994) is a Virginia Tech alumnus and former cross country/track and field athlete. Originally from Rockville, Maryland, he currently resides in Richmond and works as a dermatologist/Mohs surgeon, along with being a Navy Reservist. Dr. Parlette earned a B.S. in psychology, with minors in biology and chemistry in 1994 from Virginia Tech; a M.D. from UVA in 1998; and is a board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon. As a commander in the U.S. Navy, having served nine years on active duty and eight years in the reserves, he exemplifies the Ut Prosim motto while on the front lines fighting the current viral pandemic. Dr. Parlette most recently served on USNS Comfort, which was deployed to the New York City area to support area hospitals by treating patients regardless of their COVID-19 status. The USNS Comfort, a U.S. Navy hospital ship, primarily exists to provide trauma care for U.S. combatant forces during war time, or to provide humanitarian assistance around the world. During the ship’s mission in New York City, Dr. Parlette worked in the Medical Operations Center on the ship and served as a liaison with local hospitals that transported patients to the Comfort to alleviate the pressure experienced in the city. Dr. Parlette’s work helped to ensure that the critically ill patients accepted by theUSNS Comfort fromNewYork City, NewJersey, and surrounding areas were able to receive the highest quality care available.
