inside.hokiesports.com 7 Drive for 25 Day a success The Hokie Club held its first annual Drive for 25 Day on Sept. 25, and both Hokie Club officials and Virginia Tech Athletics officials claimed it a huge success, as fans, students, alumni, faculty, staff members and others combined to give $870,000 during a 25-hour period. The ultimate goal of the day was to increase membership into the club, another step as part of the Drive for 25 initiative. In 2016, the Hokie Club and Virginia Tech Athletics launched the Drive for 25, with the goal being to increase membership in the Hokie Club to 25,000 members. FollowingtheDrivefor25Day,officialsfromboththeathleticsdepartment and the Hokie Club expected membership to be at approximately 16,000 once new gifts were processed and uploaded into the Hokie Club’s system—an increase of more than 7,000 members since the launching of the Drive for 25 in 2016. More than 2,300 people donated during the Drive for 25 Day event, a group that included current members of the Hokie Club and new members. The $870,000 included the generous donation of 1998 Virginia Tech graduate Mehul Sanghani, a Board of Visitors member, and wife Hema, a 1999 graduate, who agreed to match up to $250,000 worth of gifts. In a look at other numbers, nearly 65 percent of donors on Drive for 25 Day were Virginia Tech alumni, and more than 10 percent of donors were recent graduates of Virginia Tech (Classes 2015-18). Nearly 15 percent of donors were former Virginia Tech student-athletes. by Jimmy Robertson Tech baseball raises $12,000 for Carilion Clinic Children’s Hospital, Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation The players on the Virginia Tech baseball team shaved their heads on Oct. 2 as part of their commitment to theVs. Cancer initiative designed to bring awareness to pediatric cancer and to raise money for both local childhood cancer hospitals and pediatric brain tumor research. The Hokies spent several months raising funds to support the cause and finished with more than $12,000. Former North Carolina baseball player Chase Jones, who survived brain cancer, started the Vs. Cancer Foundation in 2012. As a part of the initiative, players on athletics teams from around the nation raise money on behalf of the foundation, with half of the money going to a local childhood cancer hospital in the community of which the team resides and the other half going to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation for cancer research. Tech’s players elected to shave their heads as part of their commitment to the efforts, and fittingly, they chose for half of their money to go to the pediatric oncology unit at Carilion Children’s Hospital in Roanoke, Virginia. The athletics department and Carilion Clinic have been partners for several years, and in 2015, Carilion Clinic purchased naming rights to the floor of Cassell Coliseum. Thebaseball teamwill travel toRoanoke at somepoint in lateOctober after the conclusion of its fall season to present a check to Carilion Children’s. The remainder of the money raised will go to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, the world’s leading non-profit organization dedicated to childhood brain cancers and based in Asheville North Carolina.
