32 Inside Hokie Sports MONOGRAM CLUB STAFF UPDATE The Virginia Tech Monogram Club is excited to announce the hiring of Zack Treser (Class of 2019) as the new Monogram Club program assistant. Treser is a Blacksburg native who knew there was no better place to go to college than Virginia Tech, or that there was nothing better than being a Hokie! Upon arriving on campus in 2015, Treser earned a walk-on position with the football team. The coaching staff quickly recognized his dedication to the sport and his impact on his teammates, which enabled him to earn him a position as a scholarship athlete with the program. Treser graduated in the spring with a B.S. in biological science and also a minor in chemistry. Within his role with the Monogram Club, Treser will be responsible for the daily internal functions of the Club, including planning and execution of special events, in addition to promoting the growth of the organization. The Club wishes to acknowledge the exceptional help and assistance provided by Alexandra Arnold (’18), who has been doing double duty along with working in the Hokie Club. The Club hopes to see her impact in many ways throughout this athletics year! SPORT UPDATES FROMMONOGRAMCLUB DIRECTORS MEN’S GOLF Hurricane Dorian created havoc on the East Coast and forced the cancellation of the men’s golf team’s season opener in Charleston, South Carolina in September. Spirits remain high for the fall season, with upperclassmen Connor Burgess , Mark Lawrence Jr. and Slade Pickering leading the way. The team welcomed Brian Sharp to the head coaching position, along with Todd Eckstein , who replaced Sharp as the assistant coach. The coaches are very excited about this year’s team. The Hokie golf community congratulated Drew Weaver (’09) on his recent induction into the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame. Weaver was an All-American and British Amateur champion during his playing career. Golf team alumni will gather in late October for a reunion/golf tournament. More than 50 former players have committed to play, a record for the event. Contact Mike Ligon for more information (ligonm01@verizon.net ). VOLLEYBALL The Hokies are in the middle of their season, with some new talent making an immediate impact. One of the freshmen, Logan Mosley , already has broken the Virginia Tech record for the most digs in a match with 38, which came in just her fifth college match. Mosley also earned all-tournament honors at the Miami of Ohio tournament. Tech head coach Jill Wilson said, “She has a special future, for sure!” Blacksburg native and freshman Anabel Zier is climbing the ACC charts for blocking, standing in the top 10. Adding to the great start this fall is junior Marisa Cerchio , who was named the best attacker at the Liberty tournament after transitioning to a new right-side hitting position this year. Another freshman, Cera Powell , received all-tournament awards at Liberty as well, along with sophomore setter Talyn Jackson . The Hokies claimed victories over UC Irvine, Loyola Chicago and Air Force at the Amy Svoboda Memorial Classic held in Colorado Springs, Colorado in September. Wilson looked forward to continued success, saying, “It has been exciting to see big improvements weekly with our team!” The Hokies began ACC competition in late September and hope for success in league play. Wilson said, “Our team is dramatically improving weekly, especially on the offensive side, with quite a bit of young talent on the floor. I have told them the last few weeks that they won’t recognize themselves a month from now if they continue this improvement.” Keep up the great work, Hokies! SOFTBALL This coming season marks the 25th anniversary of Hokie softball. We will have an entire weekend of events planned for April 3-5, 2020 against a to-be-determined ACC opponent. “ 25 Years ” will be the theme for the entire season, as we celebrate the history of the program. The cost for each alumna is $30 for the entire weekend. More information will be forthcoming later this fall. To RSVP, please email Whitney Showalter (whitd@vt.edu ). CROSS COUNTRY The Hokie cross country team played host to the annual Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational meet Sept. 20 on the beautiful Buford Meredith Cross Country Course. Every year, this event grows in popularity, and this year, many alumni participated in the alumni race prior to watching the varsity races. Afterward, the track and field staff held a great dinner for alumni at Rector Field House, providing the opportunity for current and former student-athletes to interact. The Hokie alumni thank the entire coaching staff for providing such a great opportunity to reunite with old teammates and friends of the program. Also, plans are already under way for the annual track and field reunion, which will be held January 24-25 in conjunction with the Hokie Invitational indoor track and field meet and the programs’ Senior Night. WOMEN’S GOLF Recent Tech graduate Amanda Hollandsworth advanced through the first stage of qualifying school on her maiden voyage to the LPGA. Competing against more than 300 golfers, Hollandsworth recorded scores of 71-68-75-77 at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California earlier this summer to secure her spot in the second stage of the Tour qualifying tournament. Thanks to the far-reaching support of Hokie alumni, the 24-year-old Hollandsworth found host housing in California for the event. “I feel so honored to know that I have all of Hokie Nation behind me, as I get the opportunity to follow my dream,” Hollandsworth said. The second stage of the competition took place at Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Florida on Oct. 14-17. Top players and ties advanced to the final stage Oct. 23- Nov. 2 in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Hokies around the country are welcomed at the tournaments to watch good golf and to support former Virginia Tech players. FOOTBALL • 1969 Team Reunion —On Sept. 6-7, the 1969 team held its 50th reunion. They enjoyed a dinner reception Friday night and an on-field recognition during the Old Dominion game, followed by a postgame tailgate. There were more than 20 teammates who came in for the weekend. The postgame tailgate saw several generations of football alumni represented, with the oldest being from the class of 1961 and the youngest representing the class of 2003—for a coverage of more than six decades of Virginia Tech football!
