Inside HOKIE SPORTS | Vol. 13 No. 2 | October 2020

A s a second generation Hokie, and mom to the third and “grand” to hopefully the next generation, I am living all the great things that being a Hokie can give. I want that opportunity for as many young people as possible to experience. A four- year college experience has no equivalent in learning, growing, sharing experiences, and preparation for life. The broad spectrum of information that covers a student at Virginia Tech for four years is not matched by a technical school, a fast-paced bachelor’s or any gyration thereof. The key is letting it all in, and a true Hokie learns quickly to absorb as much as he or she can. Being a Hokie is a continual way of life led by one motto (“That I May Serve”). GO HOKIES! BEVERLEY P. HAWTHORNE Virginia Tech (Class of ’78) V irginia Tech has been a great experience for my family. In addition to myself graduating in 1995, my oldest son graduated in 2020 and my youngest son is a current junior. My family loves Hokie sports, and we are humbled to be able to give back to the university and support current student- athletes during these unprecedented times. Go Hokies! WILLIAM GRAY Virginia Tech (Class of ’95) I ’ ve experienced so many memorable moments with family and friends attending Virginia Tech sporting events—frankly more than I can count. Like all Hokie fans, I was saddened by the disruption in the fall sports schedule this year. But at the same time, I realized that our financial support was going to be especially critical. Student-athletes, coaches, and support staff are committed to the program, and I felt that, in turn, I should stand by my commitment … whether I was able to attend a game this fall or not. My enthusiasm for Hokie sports doesn’t wane just because I can’t attend a game. I’ll just cheer from afar, knowing that this has been a challenging year for everyone, and that by pulling together, we’ll all succeed. Go Hokies! KEVIN MURRAY Virginia Tech (Class of ’83) A s a former student-athlete at Tech, I understand how important it is to continue to provide support for our current student-athletes to keep them in the best position to excel both on the field and in the classroom during this very challenging time. Hokies always rise up to tackle their adversity head on, and this time is no different.
