Belk Bowl rally one for the ages
The Hokies trailed Arkansas 24-0 at
halftime of the Belk Bowl on Dec. 29 of last
year, but put on a stunning display in the
second half, scoring 35 unanswered points
to win their 10th game and their third straight
bowl game. Jerod Evans accounted for 330
yards and four second-half touchdowns
(two rushing), and Tech’s defense forced
four second-half turnovers in a rally that was
believed to be the largest in school history.
The Hokies finished the season ranked No.
16 in both major polls.
Sediva wins
another national title
Tech track and field standout Irena Sediva
won her second national championship
when she claimed the crown in the women’s
javelin throw at the NCAA Outdoor Track
and Field Championships. Sediva, who also
won the event in 2015, trailed for much of
the competition, but took the lead on her
fifth of six throws with a toss of 58.76 meters
(192 feet, 9 inches). She held on to win the
program’s 16th individual national title and
became the second woman in Tech track
and field history to win at least two national
titles, joining Queen Harrison, who won three
in 2010.
Track and field program’s
ACC outdoor double
The Tech men’s and women’s track and
field teams both trailed heading into the final
events of the ACC Outdoor Track and Field
Championships held in Atlanta, but both
teams amassed enough points in the 4x400-
meter relay to win the team titles. The Tech
men edged rival UVA by a single point, while
the Tech women slipped past Florida State by
six points. Hanna Green’s two gold medals
led the women’s team, which also got gold
medals from Irena Sediva and Sarah Edwards.
Neil Gourley, Drew Piazza and Peter Seufer
won gold for the men. For the first time, both
teams won the same ACC meet.
Allen’s layup carries
Tech to double OT win over
then - No. 12 UVA
Seth Allen scored on a layup with 3
seconds left in the second overtime to carry
the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team
to an 80-78 win over rival UVA at Virginia
Tech Carilion Court. The Hokies rallied past
the then-No. 12 Cavaliers, who led by 14 at
halftime, behind Allen, who scored 20 points.
Justin Bibbs added 16 for Tech, which beat
UVA at Cassell Coliseum for the second
straight season.
Loscalzo, McGinley carry
Hokies lacrosse to ACC upset
Behind Kristine Loscalzo and Tristan
McGinley, the Virginia Tech women’s lacrosse
team knocked off then-No. 17 and NCAA
runner-up Boston College 18-12 on Feb. 18
at the Tech Indoor Practice Facility. Loscalzo
and McGinley scored four goals each, as
Tech registered its first ACC win in four years
and snapped a 27-game ACC losing streak.
The game served as a harbinger of things
to come, as first-year head coach John Sung
guided the team to 11 victories—tying for
the most in program history.
