Mahar was a four-year standout at national powerhouse Xavier College Prep in Phoenix, Arizona. Her family’s former house is about 10 minutes from Grayhawk Golf Club, the site of the national championship. She used to take golf lessons on the driving range at the club. “It’ll be really cool to go back,” she said. “I’ve got some friends that are going to come out and watch.” For seniors like Spicer, the opportunity to tee it up one more time with her teammates is something she looks forward to. “I am probably the most excited to simply have one more chance to play as a part of this team,” Spicer expressed. “It really hit me at regionals that it could theoretically be the last time I got to represent Virginia Tech and play alongside my teammates. To have one more chance to do that, and to get to do it on the biggest stage in college golf, is really an absolute dream come true. I am certainly going to enjoy every second, but also look forward to showing everyone what Virginia Tech Women’s Golf is truly capable of.” No matter the result at nationals, the Hokies have a great deal to be proud of and have raised the bar for the future of the program. In addition to four of the regulars in the Tech lineup returning next season, including Mahar, the Hokies will add the 8th-ranked recruiting class as determined by the Golf Channel in the fall. “There is extreme excitement—the steady progress year after year proves that we can be a nationally-recognized program year in and year out,” Robertson said of the mood around the program. “The success starts with culture. If we continue to be a team with respect, grace and accountability, watch out!” Emily Mahar
